John Hartson has admitted that Celtic have had an ‘underwhelming’ January transfer window so far and he suggested that Brendan Rodgers is getting what he wants.

For many, many months, Brendan Rodgers has made it clear that he wants proven quality through the Parkhead doors to take Celtic to the next level.

This is a case of maintaining the team’s dominance on the domestic stage, but most importantly, taking that next step in Europe.

But, as of this current moment, only winger Nicolas Kuhn has been signed by Celtic following his move from Rapid Vienna.

John Hartson shared that anything can happen yet and he expects more deals to be done before the window slams shut, as he told Go Radio.

The number of wingers Celtic have was also discussed and how ‘you don’t want to be carrying too many players’.

When it comes to cleaning that side of the department up, you would assume the biggest of changes might be made in the summer, including possibly the exit of the highly-rated Rocco Vata.

Nonetheless, this was John Hartson’s viewpoint on Celtic’s January transfer window so far.

Celtic’s January transfer window

“I would expect more additions to come in,” said Hartson. “I have been a bit underwhelmed really up until now.

“But I am sure they have got their eye on one or two more certainly. There have been two or three that have gone out of the door.

“I don’t think it’s the influx of players that Brendan said. He wants seven out. Listen, that might well still happen. A lot can happen in eight days in football. But I do think the quality that Brendan Rodgers has been talking about on many occasions, we know that Kuhn has come in. He has been educated at Ajax and Bayern Munich. I do believe Celtic will have their eye on several more targets.

“Celtic have seven or eight wingers now. Only two can play. You don’t want to be carrying too many players. This is what the problem was and Brendan spoke about this.”

Patience needed

At the end of the day, the club need to make sure the right players arrive rather than numbers just coming in for the sake of it.

Yes, it’s ideal if those players can arrive this month, but if they join in the summer, then so be it.

Whilst this is also about Celtic winning the title in the short-term. What also needs to be taken into account is that the long-term.
