Kasper Dolberg has been reintegrated into Ajax’s squad after being cut from their early pre-season friendlies.

The striker, whose interest from Celtic was well-documented last summer, had seemingly been in limbo awaiting a move to Midtjylland.

The Danish club confirmed talks with the striker, but these appear to have stalled for now.

After featuring in their friendly against Olympiacos on Saturday, Dolberg has now been named in their travelling squad in Thursday’s Conference League qualifier against Vojvodina.

Should Celtic try for Kasper Dolberg again?

How much would you pay for him?

Dolberg is known in Glasgow for being earmarked as the replacement for Adam Idah in a disastrous transfer window last summer.

Against the will of Brendan Rodgers, Idah was sold before Dolberg’s signing was facilitated, before Ajax scuppered everything.

An incredible domino effect then saw Liam Delap injured for Chelsea, Marc Guiu recalled to Stamford Bridge from Sunderland and the Black Cats then pursuing Ajax’s Brian Brobbey as his replacement.

It all ended in Dolberg’s head being turned by the Dutch giants, but it’s fair to say that his move has not gone to plan.

Since completing his big-money move to Amsterdam last summer, he has scored just three league goals in 22 appearances.

Dolberg is reportedly valued at £6-7 million this summer, a fair discount on his price tag from last year.

Midtjylland’s move for the striker reportedly depends on a potential sale of their existing number nine, Franculino Dju, who scored against Celtic last November.

Reports in Denmark have insisted that the Hoops remain interested in Dolberg, though the possibility has drawn mixed reaction from the support.

Instead, Celtic appear to be pursuing another Danish striker named Kasper.

Stephen McGowan on Celtic’s push to sign Kasper Dolberg

In the aftermath of Celtic’s failed attempt to sign Dolberg, journo Stephen McGowan explained: “The intention was there to sign him, but they bid too low initially.

“The opportunity was lost on day one, effectively.

“I don’t think Dolberg was ever sold on Celtic, or more to the point Glasgow, but I’m led to believe Celtic had a private jet ready to go for him. I think they were genuine about doing it.

“The big mistake they made, as has happened so often, they did not close the deal. They didn’t get it done.

“They let Adam Idah go for a move, they told Brendan Rodgers they would get a player to replace him and they haven’t done it.

“And you then have this absurd circus where you have the wealthiest club in the country parading around on the day after the transfer window trying to persuade for free transfers.”
