Arne Engels has returned to Celtic for pre-season, and fans will be hoping to see him in action this weekend at Parkhead.

In the meantime, the Celtic midfielder’s future continues to be a talking point, as one of his possible suitors, Nottingham Forest, are now starting to make some interesting moves in the transfer market.

It has been recently reported that Forest’s first signing under new manager Oliver Glasner is expected to be RB Leipzig midfielder, Xaver Schlager.

Now, it has been reported by John Percy of the Telegraph that Forest have had an initial bid of ‘around £38 million’ rejected from Tottenham Hotspur for Lucas Bergvall.

All in all, it leaves Engels and his Celtic future in a rather interesting situation.

Lots of interest in Arne Engels. But will he leave Celtic?

The signs pointing towards why Nottingham Forest won’t come back in for Arne Engels

Remember, back in January, Celtic turned down big bids from Forest for Engels.

Even when the 2026 summer transfer window opened, that noise didn’t go away, but everything Forest are doing now suggests that they might not come back in for the 22-year-old.

Number one, they have a new manager in the dugout, Glasner.

Then it’s the suggestion that Schlager is close to signing from Leipzig on a free transfer, added with rumours that the Midlands club will go back in with a bid for Bergvall, and he is their ‘number one’ choice, according to Percy.

On top of that, popular midfielder Ibrahim Sangaré is expected to extend his stay at the City Ground, further boosting the club’s midfield options.

Interest in Engels from elsewhere…

Whilst it would be ideal for Martin O’Neill to keep hold of Engels, it’s pretty obvious that if any healthy transfer fee is put on the table, then it has to be accepted.

Engels is Celtic’s club-record transfer at £11 million, so it certainly would have to surpass that.

But even if Forest are starting to look elsewhere and no longer want Engels, it still doesn’t mean he won’t leave Glasgow this summer.

That’s because West Ham United are seemingly keen on the Belgian star, Borussia Dortmund and Leipzig have also expressed interest, while Crystal Palace and Napoli have also been previously mentioned.
