Liverpool actively looking to offload reported Celtic target Taiwo Awoniyi
Celtic target Taiwo Awoniyi is one of the players on the verge of a Liverpool exit this summer as Jurgen Klopp looks to trim his squad, Goal have reported this weekend.
As we discussed last month, there were reports that Awoniyi is being eyed by Celtic for a potential move to Glasgow, especially in the event that Odsonne Edouard is sold before next month’s transfer deadline.
It was said that he could cost as much as £9m, despite never playing for the Anfield club.
However, Goal’s latest report suggests a number of fringe talents are on their way out of Liverpool, with Awoniyi one of ten earmarked for an exit.
In my opinion, that desire to actively reduce the size of the Reds squad could lower the fee required to land the 23-year-old or perhaps even lead to a loan pursuit. The door appears open for Celtic to make a move.
Goal state that Mainz and Stuttgart are both keen on the Nigerian.
Neil Lennon already has Edouard, Patryk Klimala, Albian Ajeti at his disposal.
However, with question marks again surrounding Leigh Griffiths’ ability to feature regularly, Vakoun Bayo leaving on loan and a potential 3-5-2 formation in the offing, signing another striker wouldn’t be completely absurd.
Awoniyi may not have featured in competitive action for Liverpool but he has experience of top-flight football in Belgium, Holland and Germany.
His most impressive loan spells away from Merseyside have been at Belgium Pro League club Royal Excel Mouscron, where he scored 21 goals and assisted ten times in 47 appearances across two temporary stints (Transfermarkt).
If you fancy the idea of Celtic landing another centre-forward over the next few weeks then his name is worth keeping an eye on.
