Celtic made a loan approach for Paris Saint-Germain talent Mitchel Bakker but the offer was rejected by the French giants, Sky Sports have reported on Saturday.

However, there is still hope for the Scottish champions when it comes to landing the exciting prospect.

PSG are said to still be open to a potential deal, not completely shutting the door on future proposals.

Bakker has already made a first-team breakthrough at the star-studded club, after joining from Ajax’s youth academy last summer.

A new dawn beckons for Celtic in Europe, as Joe Hart shows his class once again

He’s played five times and was named on the bench for the Champions League quarter-final, semi-final and final last month.

However, behind Layvin Kurzawa and Juan Bernat he has little chance of being a regular starter over the coming season and a loan could be perfect for his development at the age of 20.

He is represented by high profile agent Mino Raiola, who also looks after some of Europe’s brightest young players such as Erling Haaland and Matthijs De Ligt, as well as superstars such as Paul Pogba (Transfermarkt).

My colleague Hamish Carton, from the 67 Hail Hail YouTube channel, took a closer look at the player last month as social media rumours ramped up.

His verdict was a positive one, feeling that Bakker is destined for big things in European football as a PSG prospect and Dutch U21 squad member.

Bakker may not have much experience but then neither did former PSG talent Odsonne Edouard before arriving in Glasgow.

Celtic badly need a left-back after Boli Bolingoli let himself and the club down with a secret trip to Spain against pandemic protocols.

Greg Taylor needs competition and after the departure of Jonny Hayes during the summer, there is nobody else available in the position.

Bakker has had a great education coming through Ajax and is on the cusp of more minutes at one of Europe’s best teams.

That’s evidence enough for me that he could come to Celtic Park and make an impact.

In other news, Celtic have contacted Philadelphia Union about defender Mark McKenzie.
