Mat Ryan stays open to Celtic move on Aussie TV despite Spanish speculation

Mat Ryan has given an interesting, slightly odd and culinary-focused response to Celtic speculation.

The Australia goalkeeper has been tipped for a reunion with Ange Postecoglou at Celtic Park [Sky Sports]. The Bhoys need a goalkeeper, with Vasilis Barkas struggling on his debut campaign, and Scott Bain unimpressive as his back-up.

Ryan spent the latter half of the 20-21 season on loan at Arsenal. He’d been described as “close” to a move to Real Sociedad [Sky Sports]. However, that may not be the case.

Asked by Fox Sports (Australia) whether he preferred Haggis or Paella, i.e. Celtic or Real Sociedad, Ryan replied [Fox]:

“Haggis every day of the week…!

“Nah, at the minute I’m on the fence. I’m not sure what I fancy, what my tastebuds are craving just now. I’ll have to wait and see.

“At the minute, just nothing. I’m just waiting and seeing. Until, I guess, I get a bit of a craving to find out.”

“I mean, it’s obviously always flattering to have interest and all that. There’s been a lot of speculation about it, I guess, people putting two and two together.

“Realising that I guess I’m probably at the stage of my career now where [a move] is probably going to be happening given the circumstances at Brighton.

“And obviously, given the relationship between Ange and I in the past, in the national team, I think there’s a lot of people putting two and two together. It’s interesting, that move may come about.

“I’m not really sure what’s going, just waiting and seeing. And trying to give the diplomatic answer.”

Has Mat Ryan just dropped a massive Celtic hint?

Astonishingly, Ryan’s latter answer came entirely out of context. He’d actually been asked if he was surprised by the reaction from Celtic fans over Postecoglou’s hiring.

Instead, though, he launched into some umming and ahhing about a move to Paradise. Certainly, he’d be a considerable upgrade on the options we have now. As an Asian Cup winner alongside Postecoglou, there’d be immediate, pre-established trust.

Which, of course, would be worlds away from last season. Neil Lennon just didn’t seem to know who he wanted between the sticks. Barkas, Bain and Conor Hazard were seemingly drawn out of a hat, and the defence suffered for the lack of consistency.

Mat Ryan may have just dropped a somewhat unsolicited hint that he’s ready to join Celtic. If so, that’s more than worthy cause for excitement.
