Next stage of Celtic recruitment strategy looks set to move into place
Celtic are reportedly bracing themselves for January transfer interest in right-back and Croatian international Josip Juranovic.
The 27-year-old joined the Hoops from Polish side Legia Warsaw last summer as part of Ange Postecoglou’s squad rebuild.
And Juranovic proved to be a quality acquisition after signing for around £2.5 million, playing a key part in the Bhoys Scottish Premiership and Premier Sports cup success.
Following a brilliant first season in the green and white Hoops, inevitably, transfer interest arrived in the defender during the summer.
European giants, including Atletico Madrid and Chelsea, were linked with moves for the right-back after it was initially reported that he was expected to leave Parkhead.
However, Juranovic remained a Celtic player come the end of the summer window, instead choosing to focus his commitment to the Bhoys, who were involved in UEFA Champions League group stage action.
With his first-choice right-back role at the club also locked down, it meant that there was a likelihood he would also remain as the number-one right-back for his international side.
That proved to be the case, with Juranovic now gearing up to participate in this winter’s World Cup for Croatia, taking place in Qatar.
When the tournament comes to an end in December, the Celtic defender will return to the club, with a number of crucial fixtures later next month and into January.
However, if reports are to be believed, those fixtures could be looking like his final outings after it was reported that the club were preparing for January transfer interest in the right back.
According to Stephen McGowan in the Daily Mail, the Hoops hierarchy have held talks with Juranovic’s agent over a new contract. But, those talks were unsuccessful.
Although the Croatian’s future is still tied to the club, with his current deal running until 2026, Celtic are now bracing for transfer interest, which is expected to arrive in January.
A strong performance at the World Cup this month could lead to further interest in the defender, with a January exit seeming more likely at this stage.
Next stage of Ange Postecoglou’s transfer strategy looks set to be getting underway.
As supporters, it is never nice to see some of your better players move on. Particularly when it is a popular member of the squad like Juranovic.
However, it could be a sign that the next stage of Ange Postecoglou’s recruitment strategy is starting to get underway.
Earlier this month, the Celtic manager spoke about the importance of the club’s transfer dealings, including moving players on, in order to improve the squad.
So, if Juranovic was to move to a new side in the January transfer window, you would imagine the Bhoys recruitment team would already have plans in place for his replacement option.
Celtic supporters have been delighted with Ange Postecoglou’s transfer dealings thus far, ever since his arrival last summer.
However, we are set to see the Celtic manager face arguably his toughest recruitment challenge yet, by finding another quality replacement for Juranovic.
It says a lot about both the supporters and club hierarchies with the amount of faith they have in the 57-year-old, with those involved at the club feeling confident about Postecoglou stepping up to that task.
