Nikolas Polster has sent Celtic a clear transfer message this summer, with the goalkeeper openly admitting he wants the next step in his career and does not intend to stay in Austria.

The Austrian Cup winner with Wolfsberger has been one of the club’s most important players this season and now wants to move on.

And with Celtic already linked with Polster earlier this summer, could this now give Martin O’Neill the chance to sign some competition for Viljami Sinisalo?

Should Viljami Sinisalo be the long-term replacement for Kasper Schmeichel?

Celtic were already watching Nikolas Polster before latest admission

Polster was not an unknown name when reports first linked him with Celtic. The 23-year-old delivered strong numbers in Austria last season, recording 81 saves, nine clean sheets and prevented 3.46 goals.

He also started 29 league matches, so Celtic would be looking at an established first-choice goalkeeper rather than a project signing.

Those numbers are why Celtic started watching him in the first place. Polster has now done his part by making it clear he wants a move abroad.

Celtic now know exactly what Nikolas Polster wants

Speaking about his future, Polster told Krone, “It’s time for the next step in my career. I’ve done a lot for the club and in the end, a transfer fee would be a win-win situation.”

“I don’t want to join an Austrian team.”

Polster could not be any clearer. He wants to leave Wolfsberger, he believes a sale benefits the club and is now looking beyond Austria.

Celtic will not be alone if they decide to move. But if the scouting work has already been done and now the player has made his position public.

Celtic have already identified the player. Polster has now made it clear he wants the move. If the club rate him highly enough, there is little reason to sit on their hands
