Peter Grant highlights Celtic’s transfer ‘problem’ with left-back Alexandro Bernabei

The injury to Greg Taylor has left Celtic in a spot of bother because it has now forced the club to rush for that left-back before the January window slams shut.

Before the Celtic star got injured, there was talk of a new face coming in and the out-of-favour, Alexandro Bernabei, heading for the exit door.

But now the Argentine star finds himself starting, as he did during Celtic’s narrow 1-0 win over Ross County on Saturday.

Peter Grant spoke about that ‘sudden’ change and Alexandro Bernabei possibly staying and the ‘problem’ it can cause if he does now leave, as he told Go Radio.

As of this moment, regardless of what Celtic fans think of him, he simply can’t leave because there is no other fit senior player in that position.

Without Alexandro Bernabei, it would probably force Brendan Rodgers to play someone out of position, which would just cause issues.

So, whilst the likes of Chris Sutton plead for a left-back to come in, you can’t let the now-starting left-back go, with Peter Grant speaking about the 23-year-old’s situation.

Alexandro Bernabei to stay?

“All of a sudden you think they are going to go out of the door and then Greg gets an injury,” said Grant.

“But it just shows how important he is. He does a lot of good things that go unnoticed. I am a supporter of his, I have no doubt in my mind because it’s a difficult role he plays as the Celtic left-back. He gets forward, creates a lot and helps Palma. He runs by him so many times and doesn’t get the ball.

“You realised that on Saturday, how big a job it is for Celtic and the role it is.

“Yes, you are always looking to improve areas of the pitch if you are going to get better because that’s what football is and as a football player you have to be playing at your best all the time.

“The problem is if they let him (Bernabei) go now, then you would be playing a right-footer on the left-hand side.”

Celtic can only blame themselves

If things remain the same and another left-back isn’t signed, then the club can only blame themselves and themselves only.

The issue is that fans saw this a mile off and felt that this should have been addressed long before the transfer deadline day.

So, when the Parkhead faithful are frustrated, and even express it after a win in the league, then it’s understandable.

There isn’t much time left before the window slams shut, but it’s going to be interesting to see if any surprises are in the offing at Celtic.
