One of the big questions Brendan Rodgers has to answer at Celtic is, who will be the club’s number one goalkeeper in the long term?
Joe Hart currently dons the number one jersey for Celtic, but his contract will expire in the summer, alongside number two Scott Bain, whilst Benjamin Siegrist has a deal until 2026.
As a result, Stephen McGinn thinks there will be a sea change to Celtic’s goalkeeping situation in the summer and he believes all of the above three will leave or new contracts won’t be handed out.
As the Bhoys have proven with the Nicolas Kuhn signing, they are being pro-active in the wide areas.
But Stephen McGinn thinks, the manner in which the club have treated the goalkeeping situation has been the opposite and ‘strange’, as he told Go Radio.
Joe Hart has been a solid performer since joining from Tottenham, including playing a key role in the Treble-winning side under Ange Postecoglou.
But it’s pretty clear that the long-term now needs to be looked at, with Stephen McGinn pretty clear that Scott Bain and Benjamin Siegrist certainly aren’t the answers.
Celtic’s goalkeeping situation
“Joe Hart has been brilliant for Celtic on and off the park,” said McGinn. “I think it will be his last season, who am I to say? Joe Hart might want to end the season strongly and earn another year at Celtic.
“But the whole goalkeeping situation. Scott Bain and Benjamin Siegrist will move on.
“I think, in the summer, Celtic might be looking for a number one and a number two. More of a long-term strategy. Maybe, with the number two, I know Will Dennis got linked a few months back. Someone of that type. He’s not quite challenging for the number one. But one for the future.
“So they don’t have another situation where they don’t have a number two that’s ready to go in and play. Just keep building for your future. They do that for the rest of the positions in the squad. The goalkeeper situation has been a strange one over the last few years.”

January transfer window
Some Celtic fans would argue that a new goalkeeper should be brought in during the January transfer window, instead of the summer.
That player in question might not start straight away, but it provides them with the chance to settle in ahead of next season.
But if it’s a case of playing the waiting game because the club want to sign a main target, such as the heavily linked Liverpool star Caoimhin Kelleher, then so be it.
