Report: Burnley favourites to sign Taylor Harwood-Bellis; had attracted Celtic attention
English Championship side Burnley are ‘red hot favourites’ to sign Manchester City defender Taylor Harwood-Bellis, journalist Alan Nixon has reported.
The 20-year-old central defender has recently been linked with Celtic after Sky Sports reported that the Hoops were ‘monitoring’ his situation with the English Premier League champions.
Ange Postecoglou is on the lookout for another defender to add to his squad, and Harwood-Bellis appeared to be someone catching the eye.
With Celtic’s recent connections to the City Group, it would seemed like a move that would make sense, should any concrete interest have come from the Bhoys.
However, according to the report from journalist Alan Nixon, recently relegated Premiership side Burnley are now ‘red hot favourites’ to sign the defender on loan ‘ahead of Celtic’.
The Turf Moor side are still currently on the lookout for a new manager. But, former Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany is expected to take over the role this week.
This appointment would add more context to their move for Harwood-Bellis, with the Belgian’s strong links to City.
Harwood-Bellis has also spent time working under Kompany as a manager, spending the first half of last season on loan with Anderlecht.
Ange Postecoglou is on the hunt for another central defender to add to his back four
Last season, on the domestic front, the backline was arguably one of the strongest parts of Ange Postecoglou’s new-look Celtic side.
However, beyond Cameron Carter-Vickers and Carl Starfelt, some would consider there to be a lack of depth in that area of the pitch.
Stephen Welsh is currently seen as the replacement, should either of the first-choice centre-backs pick up a knock, and the Scotland U21 internationalist very much helped Postecoglou’s squad through the season’s early stages.
Elsewhere, though, Christopher Jullien’s future with the club remains uncertain, and he could potentially be set for an exit during this window.
So, it will be intriguing to see what sort of central defender the Celtic manager targets this summer.
One thing appears to be certain, the Hoops’ potential interest in Harwood-Bellis may be about to fall away, should he join the Championship side on loan within the next few weeks.
