Celtic are one of the potential loan destinations for RB Salzburg left-back talent Gideon Mensah, according to an exclusive report from GhanaSoccerNet.com.

The outlet reckon that after a move to Barcelona broke down last week the Austrian side are looking to send him back out on loan for the season.

It’s said Zulte Waregem of Belgium are also in the hunt for his signature, with the player to decide his future this week.

Rated as worth £810,000 by Transfermarkt, the 21-year-old Ghanaian youth international spent part of last term out on loan at Sturm Graz, which was his first real taste of top-flight football.

The player has yet to make his senior debut for Salzburg. To date he has just 15 Austrian Bundesliga appearances to his name. He has also played some matches in the second-tier.

With Celtic said to be struggling to land both Birger Meling and Greg Taylor, the defender could well be our fall back option.

What should we make of this?

Boli Bolingoli is visibly improving from match to match, but we definitely need back-up and competition for the Belgian.

After selling Kieran Tierney to Arsenal for £25m, the arrival of an inexperienced player on loan likely wouldn’t go down too well with supporters, even if he has potential.

It’s fair to say many of us, including myself, are expecting a player of quality to arrive who can hit the ground running at the Hoops.

Tierney was one of our most effective and influential players. Although he had his injury problems last term and we coped, we can’t be complacent about his replacement.

Without knowing much about Mensah he would obviously have to be given a fair shake by fans if he does arrive. However, his profile doesn’t exactly provide much confidence he’s the right man for the job.

With just a week left of the transfer window, the club need to start getting some targets over the line. It’ll be interesting to see if the 21-year-old is one.
