Celtic have submitted an improved offer for Peterborough United striker Ivan Toney, The Glasgow Times has reported on Wednesday.
Manager Neil Lennon looks intent on improving his attacking options this summer, with the club also said to be close to a move for Albian Ajeti of West Ham United.
Whether the continuing interest in 24-year-old Toney is in addition to the Swiss international remains to be seen.
However, it is interesting to hear our pursuit has survived Posh rejecting our initial offer, even as we court Ajeti.
The Glasgow Times say that Celtic have gone in for Toney again, as he continues to be left out of Darren Ferguson’s squads in pre-season.
The Peterborough boss had previously spoken of his intention to only play the striker if he was still at the club when the new League One campaign kicks off.
As quoted by The Peterborough Telegraph at the start of the month, Ferguson said: “We will have to wait and see with Ivan and it could be a distraction if his situation rumbles on. That wouldn’t be ideal.
“It would be better if things were resolved quickly, but the owners quite rightly won’t sell him unless they get the right price so it could be we end up with the best striker in League One playing for us at the start of the season so I’m quite relaxed about it.
“Ivan won’t play in the first friendlies, but if he is still here as the new season approaches I will have to play him.”
Today, Posh owner Darragh MacAnthony has refused to confirm or deny the report of Celtic’s latest offer, responding to a Hoops fan on Twitter, wishing the club all the best for ten-in-a-row.
I won't be making comments re specific clubs on this Stacey. On my podcast I have updated fans as to the situation re Ivan. Thanks and all the best for 10 in a row. https://t.co/GkcDNDDrHi

On the latest episode of The Hard Truth podcast, MacAnthony said: “It’s been a frustrating time with regard to Ivan. I’ve had Celtic fans telling me we shouldn’t be asking £5m for a League One player, but believe me the deal we negotiated a couple of weeks ago was for a lot more than that.”
Toney scored 26 goals in 36 appearances between League One and the FA Cup last season (Transfermarkt), emerging as one of the hottest properties in Britain outside of the Premier League.
Also sought after by Brentford, The Glasgow Times reports his preferred destination is Celtic.
This is one to watch over the coming days, even if we finally announce Ajeti’s arrival.
