Celtic have held talks with Schalke defender Malick Thiaw, according to reports in Italy.

The 20-year-old central defender came through the Schalke academy and has made almost 60 appearances for his boyhood club.

Thirty-one of those appearances came last season, as the German under-21 internationalist helped his side back to the Bundesliga, playing alongside another reported Celtic target Ko Itakura.

The talented defender has previously attracted interest from Serie A side AC Milan, along with several English Premier League teams such as Everton and Liverpool [Football Italia]

However, according to reports from Italian outlet Calciomercato, Thiaw is currently in talks with Ange Postecoglou’s side surrounding a potential move.

This news comes after it was stated earlier today that Celtic defender Christopher Jullien looks to be heading to the recently promoted Bundesliga side on loan with an option to buy deal.

And the Bhoys appear to be interested in bringing a defender the other way, being linked to the eight-time capped German youth international.

Although it could take a considerable fee to prize Thiaw away from his current side, with former Scottish Football commentator Derek Rae reporting that it may cost upwards of €8 million.

Ange Postecoglou’s hunt for a centre-back is underway.

Once the exit of Christopher Jullien is confirmed, it seems almost certain that Ange Postecoglou will be targeting another central defensive option.

The hunt is already underway, and Malick Thiaw isn’t the first player the Hoops have been linked to in this position.

If Celtic were to make a move for the Schalke man, it could prove to be an exciting signing with the defender being watched by clubs from all across Europe.

We will have to wait and see if the interest comes to anything, and hopefully, the club moves quickly to find a quality replacement for the departing Jullien.

In other news, English option ruled out for Celtic talent getting renewed chance in Lennoxtown training.
