Report: Celtic want Copa America defensive talent but face stiff competition

Celtic are one of the teams showing interest in Ecuador international Piero Hincapie, it has been reported by Mundo Deportivo.

The Spanish-language outlet believes that Atletico Madrid, Real Betis, Paris Saint-Germain, Bayern Munich, AC Milan, Newcastle, Lens and Roma are all also in the hunt.

Should be easy to buy him then, right?

Clearly, this would be a difficult deal to conclude given some of the clubs in the frame, but the link does further demonstrate that Celtic are showing a bit of ambition when looking for a defensive talent this summer.

Celtic are also tracking impressive Croatian Mario Vuskovic, as we discussed this morning.

Hincapie has been a breakout star at the Copa America this month, playing all three of Ecuador’s matches at the tournament so far. Still just 19, he’s destined for big things.

Piero Hincapie has limited experience and a high price tag for Celtic

As you’d expect from a player his age, the centre-half’s experience is limited. However, he has been playing regularly in the Argentinian top-flight and Copa Sudamericana for Talleres.

Any Celtic move for him is further complicated by a potential £8.6m fee. [Mundo Deportivo]

That’d be in the upper reaches of what we’d pay for a player this summer. It’s also quite a lot of money to be spending on a player who is perhaps more potential than the finished product.

In fairness, I’ve been looking for an excuse to watch more of the Copa America, so this link will tide me over!

Hincapie and Ecuador are due to face off against the mighty Brazil on Sunday at 10 pm UK time. That’ll be a massive test of his ability and is now one to keep an eye on.

In other news, Celtic-linked Ryan Gauld offered £41k-a-week from MLS; decision soon.
