Southampton have joined the race for Celtic star Odsonne Edouard, but need him to lower his wage demands, according to a report.

The Scottish Sun state that Edouard is being pursued by the south coast side, who famously signed Virgil van Dijk and Stuart Armstrong from the Bhoys. French Eddy could be next, but only if he decreases his wage expectations.

The report states Southampton are to negotiate over the weekend. Having lost Danny Ings to Aston Villa [BBC], the Saints need goals. As such, they’re battling with Brighton and Hove Albion for Odsonne Edouard.

According the report, the Seagulls are still negotiating on a fee with Celtic. Southampton, meanwhile, are fine paying the £20m that the Hoops are after. It’s more the player’s personal demands that are the sticking point.

Yesterday, we argued that Odsonne Edouard’s time had come to a natural conclusion with Celtic. A fantastic player on his day, there’s no doubt that speculation over his future has affected him.

Kyogo Furuhashi has arrived to excellent effect so far, and the Bhoys probably have further transfer plans should Edouard depart. For Celtic, if they’re resigned to losing him, it has to be a case of getting a deal done quickly, and for the right price.

Losing Odsonne Edouard will ultimately be a sad experience. However, he’s not been himself, and if Celtic can fill out the squad with a few more names, then it’s probably for the best long term.

Reported Southampton target Odsonne Edouard is right to ask for substantial money from Premier League clubs

Let’s face it; it’s not as if Premier League clubs are short a bob or two. It’s also true that some very mediocre players are on far more money than Edouard is on now.

The career of a footballer is a comparatively short one. If Southampton want Odsonne Edouard, as reported, they’re probably going to have to offer the striker something substantial.

It’d be daft of the Frenchman not to seek life-changing sums. The Premier League is money-daft. It’s also volatile, with players being written off quickly. Therefore, Edouard should want to have financial assurances.

Strictly speaking, we don’t know how much he wants. It seems unlikely to be anything extravagant by Premier League standards.

In any case, it seemed Brighton were in the driver’s seat to land Odsonne Edouard. Southampton, though, seem a surer thing. There, he can link up with old pals Mohamed Elyounoussi and Fraser Forster.

There’s also the van Dijk precedent; after moving to Southampton, the Dutch centre-back became a worldwide star, earning a £75m move to Liverpool [BBC].
