Report states Eddie Howe already has a major Celtic transfer target but all is not as it seems

Eddie Howe isn’t even in the Celtic door yet and already he’s being linked with potential Celtic signings.

The Scottish Sun, who have been at the forefront of the Howe reporting over the last week, released a new report last night stating Howe’s intention to bring Bournemouth stalwart Steve Cook to Celtic Park this summer.

Howe will undoubtedly have potential targets in mind if he does choose to accept the Hoops job, so the report does make sense.

It’s said Cook is eyeing an exit from the Cherries this summer if they don’t gain promotion to the Premier League, however, a reunion with Howe would obviously appeal even if they do go up.

Cook, 29, doesn’t really fit the profile of recent Celtic signings but could be available fairly cheaply considering his contract situation.

The Scottish Sun reckon his contract expires this summer, but a bit of digging reveals his contract may well run until the summer of 2022.

BBC and Bournemouth broadcaster Kris Temple reported on Twitter in March that Cook signed a behind-the-scenes deal in 2019 which extended his deal.

The player himself seemed to confirm that too, replying just over an hour later on the social media platform.

So, it may not be as easy as signing him up on a pre-contract but there is clearly still opportunity for Celtic to manouevre.

Cook has been one of Howe’s big soldiers over the years, consistently selected in his starting eleven.

The defender has been at the club since 2011, making 375 appearances on their path from English League One to the top-flight and back to the Championship.

Like the club in that period he’s had his ups and downs, but obviously has the trust of Howe.

During the 2016/17 season, he played in every minute of their Premier League campaign and was named supporters’ player of the year. He also won the club’s goal-of-the-season award for his strike against Liverpool.

He has since become the club captain.

One to watch for sure, especially if Howe is indeed installed as boss this week.
