Reported Celtic transfer target Josh Doig has been named the Scottish Football Writers Association’s young player of the year today.

The Hibernian youngster has had an excellent and exciting breakthrough campaign at Easter Road.

He wins the 2020/21 award ahead of David Turnbull, Lewis Ferguson and Nathan Patterson, which demonstrates how highly he is thought of by critics.

Turnbull has won the award before of course, at Motherwell for the 2018/19 season before his injury problems.

Former Celtic hero Kieran Tierney is also a notable prior winner, picking up the award for three seasons in a row between 2016 and 2018.

Other winners in the past include Ryan Christie, Stuart Armstrong and Craig Gordon.

That Doig follows in all of their footsteps is interesting framing for Celtic’s reported interest in the prospect.

Sky Sports reported back in January that the Bhoys are monitoring his progress and considering a summer move for the player.

Stephen McGowan at The Scottish Daily Mail has reported this weekend the 18-year-old could be available for as little as £1.2m despite recently signing a new contract.

There may be some concern about moving for a young player this summer rather than a proven talent, but Doig is destined for bigger things and buying in on his potential now would be a smart move.

It also happens that we badly need reinforcement on that left flank with Diego Laxalt heading back to Milan, Boli Bolingoli certainly not the answer and Greg Taylor struggling to impress too.

Doig appears to be happy playing somewhere he can get regular first-team football. But who’s to say we can’t offer him that at Celtic? It didn’t do us any harm to invest playing time in Tierney from a young age, after all.

Tierney also happens to be one of Doig’s big career inspirations. An easy sell for Celtic, surely?

In other news, Celtic FC Women have continued their fine form with a 3-0 win over Motherwell today.
