Scotland’s changes to transfer windows for 2026-27: What it means for Celtic

The Scottish transfer windows have been altered ahead of the 2026-27 season.

For many Celtic fans, transfer windows haven’t been happy times in recent years… but there’s no avoiding that this summer’s window will be one of the most important in recent memory.

Many key players are expected to leave, and Martin O’Neill has a significant rebuild on his hands. Lessons simply have to be learned from recent transfer windows.

And the changes to the windows will, in theory, be to Celtic’s benefit.

Celtic will have an advantage over European competitors in 2026-27 transfer window

The Scottish transfer window will close on Thursday, 3 September at 5PM UK time, a change from the 11PM finish we’ve been used to in recent years.

Good news for your sleep schedules.

Crucially, major leagues like the English Premier League, EFL, and French Ligue 1 close on the first of September; two days earlier.

There is a similar gap between the end of the winter window, once again allowing Celtic a unique trading window after the English window closes.

In several recent cases, deadline day moves have fallen through due to Celtic scrambling for late deals. They have even less excuse for not getting deals done with later deadlines.

Celtic’s last summer transfer window was the catalyst for the manic season which ensued. Brendan Rodgers’ first press conference after the window’s closure was something to behold.

He described feeling ’empty’, and blasted the ‘cowardly action’ of a club insider who briefed against him. When asked if he knew the identity of the leak, he said ‘no’… with a subtle wink.

We have Paul Tisdale to thank for the transfer oversight, whilst Michael Nicholson has grown a reputation similar to that of Peter Lawwell for being a hardball negotiator.

Which players are likely to depart, given that Martin O’Neill will stay?

Andy Walker on Martin O’Neill’s Celtic rebuild

Speaking on the Go Radio Football Show, Andy Walker said of O’Neill and Celtic’s impending rebuild: “He still has the enthusiasm.

“The contrast with his experience and the energy of the younger ones beside him.

“Just off the top of your head, you need a new goalkeeper. Will Engels leave? Will Maeda leave? Will Hatate leave? It looks likely.

“You have players like Saracchi, Araujo, Cvancara, Benjamin Arthur, and I am sure there are others. It’s a big summer for anyone. They need replacing. You need quality.

“You need to be able to say, or Martin O’Neill needs to be able to say, ‘Absolutely, he is my first target. I want him. He will make such a difference. I know what he will bring to us.’ Will he get that player?”
