Shaun Maloney has cited his knowledge of Liam Morrison’s time at Celtic as a reason why he’s signed the young defender on loan from Bayern Munich.
Morrison was one of the bright lights of the Bhoys academy before the German giants came calling and offered him a pathway towards making an impact within their set-up.
He progressed through their youth teams, earned a new contract and has made it to the fringes of the German side’s first-team squad, even featuring as an unused substitute towards the end of last season.
Now the central defender will have an opportunity to shine in English League One under a former Celtic man – after signing on loan at Wigan Atheltic for the 2023/24 season.
His new manager, Shaun Maloney said: “Liam is a very positive signing for us. I’ve known of Liam’s talent for a long time back to when he was at Celtic.
“The fact we can attract a player of his calibre from Bayern Munich says a lot about this football club and the direction we want to go in. Liam’s an aggressive modern-day defender who is also very good on the ball. He will be a fantastic addition for us and I’m looking forward to helping him develop.”

Morrison is excited by the opportunity, telling Wigan fans: “I’m absolutely delighted to be here. I can’t wait to get started and play at this massive stadium in front of all the Wigan fans. For me, it’s important to start getting first-team football at my age. Wigan is a huge club – and you cannot downplay Wigan like it’s nothing compared to Bayern.
“I really wanted to come to Wigan as soon as I heard of the interest. With the new owners coming in – and Shaun Maloney starting his first full season in charge – there feels like there is a lot of positivity in the club.”
Maloney previously coached at Lennoxtown before heading off to test himself within the Belgian national team camp so will be well aware of Morrison’s natural talent – which no doubt has been honed well by Bayern.
It’ll be very interesting to see how the 20-year-old copes in League One with his first real exposure to senior football.
It’s a big year for Maloney’s managerial career too after having a difficult spell at Hibs. He’ll be eager to show he has the magic touch and help Wigan back to the Championship after their relegation.
Good luck to them both!
