Sky reporter shares if Celtic could still sign Dundee loan star Owen Beck from Liverpool in the summer

Celtic fans will still be hugely frustrated that a left-back wasn’t signed during the January transfer window because it was clear one was needed.

Even before Greg Taylor got injured, Brendan Rodgers needed a left-back to challenge and compete with the Scotland star.

That was touched upon by Anthony Joseph and how close Celtic came to signing Liverpool left-back Owen Beck, before he ended up making an appearance for his parent club, then being unable to make that move to Parkhead because he had already spent half a season on loan at Dundee.

The fact that the 21-year-old returned to Dundee proved how poor Celtic were in not making sure that they signed the highly-rated player quicker – he spoke about the interest from the Bhoys.

That is now in the past and the club have to look forward to the summer, with the Sky Sports journalist adding that ‘there is a chance’ Owen Beck signs, as he told The Celtic Exchange

The only issue is that if the Wales U21 international continues to shine, then teams with bigger finances might just come knocking for his services.

That will just further annoy the Celtic fanbase because it proves how poorly the winter transfer went and the lack of planning.

Will Celtic sign Owen Beck?

“Even before Greg Taylor was injured, they were wanting to get a left-back in,” said Joseph. “They looked at a number of players. There were a number of targets.

“Owen Beck being one of them. Celtic were at the stage of, maybe on the 20th of January, before Liverpool played Bournemouth, the day before that. They were sort of making headway there and through intermediaries there was a chance, if he doesn’t play for Liverpool, then there is a good chance Owen Beck can join Celtic, whether that’s on loan or even a permanent deal was being explored.

“But he came on for a whole seven or eight minutes when Liverpool were three or four up against Bournemouth. It scuppered everything.

“There is still a chance for Celtic to re-visit that in the summer, but a lot of Championship clubs were looking at Owen Beck as well in England. If he has another good second half of the season, then Celtic could face competition if they are still looking at Owen Beck.”

Brendan Rodgers is in a spot of bother

With Taylor in the treatment room, Alexandro Bernabei has been filling in and he has started the last two league games.

He looked pretty decent during the rusty 1-0 win over Ross County, but was hooked off after an hour against Aberdeen at the weekend.

That’s an area of concern and it wouldn’t be a surprise if opposing teams decide to target that area of the pitch.

It also doesn’t help when the team as a whole is producing poor performances because it just adds pressure to the fringe players who are trying to prove their worth.
