Sky Sports clear up confusing Celtic transfer report

Reliable Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph has reported that Celtic have not made contact with Caen regarding striker Alexandre Mendy, despite reports in France.

L’Equipe reported earlier this week that the Bhoys had actually made an official bid for the player, which was rejected on account of the Ligue 2 side wanting more.

However, Joseph reported on social media today: “Understand there’s been no contact from Celtic for Caen striker Alexandre Mendy.

“I’d imagine they’ll be looking for a striker in the summer… unless Albian Ajeti bursts back onto the scene AND Ange Postecoglou sees Daizen Maeda as a striker long-term. Not a priority, though.”

In truth, the link was always hard to get our head around considering both the player and his agent have made it quite clear in recent times that he isn’t keen on a Caen exit.

Mendy has scored 16 goals this season but Celtic are already well-stocked in that department, already boasting Kyogo Furuhashi, Giorgos Giakoumakis and Daizen Maeda in that area.

All of this, plus Joseph’s update, pretty much puts this transfer link to bed as an active situation to take interest in, heading towards the summer.

Celtic’s priorities in the upcoming window are expected to be at left-back, centre-back and right wing, so reports on players in those positions will always come with added credibility.

With the Bhoys on the verge of looking forward to some serious Champions League cash, it could be an exciting time for transfers. I have a feeling Postecoglou will be looking to take Celtic to the next level.
