Sky Sports journalist Anthony Joseph has opened up to The Celtic Exchange podcast about the reporting involving the Bhoys, Ben Davies and Liverpool during the last transfer window.

At one point, Joseph reported that he had signed a pre-contract agreement with Celtic.

However, it later transpired this was not the case and the former Preston North End defender ended up putting pen to paper at Liverpool and moving to Anfield.

Usually, declarative transfer news from the broadcaster such as this is seen as reliable, so there were a lot of people wondering what had gone wrong.

It was a frustrating, confusing saga for Celtic supporters.

Joseph, to his credit, has cleared up some of the details surrounding the reporting and timeline of events.

He told The Celtic Exchange podcast: “We were very close to all sides of that story – Celtic, player’s side, Preston. If you knew the people telling us it was done, you would understand why we put it out that it was done.

“It looked to me that the player had agreed, had the contract, he’d agreed the pre-contract but he hadn’t signed it that night. We had reported he had signed it because we were told it was signed.

“Obviously, he’s slept on it – not that he wasn’t going to sign it, I think he’s genuinely just not signed it and submitted it – the next morning he’s woken up and other clubs in England are after him. It materialised that Liverpool were the ones who were strong and ended up, as Neil Lennon put it, gazumping Celtic.

“He had agreed. We were wrong with our wording that he’d signed it, but we weren’t jumping the gun on that, we were told that it was done. If you knew who was telling us this you’d be confident. It can happen, I had to own up to it.”

Anthony Joseph Celtic Exchange interview well worth a listen

That’s just a small part of a much bigger interview with The Celtic Exchange that you should definitely have a listen to. Joseph talks about his career so far, the Celtic rebuild and other issues surrounding the club.

Despite the Davies events, he has become one of the more trusted sources for breaking Celtic news over the last 12 months. That will no doubt continue heading into the next transfer window.

As for Davies, well he’s struggling for game time at Liverpool and we’ve already written on 67 Hail Hail that Celtic should be all over the situation come the end of the season.

Could a loan move be on the cards for a player we were hours away from signing in January?

In other news, a teammate of Liam Shaw has reacted to his big Celtic decision.
