Former Celtic midfielder Stiliyan Petrov is excited by the prospect of the club tying down Jota to a permanent contract, as widely reported in the press this week.

The latest on the Portuguese winger is that he is expected to be part of Celtic’s pre-season plans and will sign from Benfica in the coming days after the Bhoys agreed to pay £6.4m.

Petrov thinks it’ll be one of the most important bits of transfer business that Ange Postecoglou does this summer, delivering gushing praise for the player in this weekend’s papers.

As quoted by The Glasgow Times, he said: “What he brings is excitement around Celtic Park and not many clubs have the pleasure to have a player like that. He plays with a smile on his face, he takes people on, he’s aggressive and has urgency.

“When you have someone like that, you have to push to keep him. I know there would be interest from everywhere, but, if you are Celtic, you have to push to keep these players because these are the ones that everyone follows. It seemed like last season, every time he was on the pitch, everybody followed him because they know he can produce. If you don’t have him, you are going to get weaker.  Even if you get someone else, it is going to take time to adapt to what the manager wants because the manager plays a different way with his demands.

“When you have a manager like that, you need players who are comfortable. He was scoring goals, he was creating goals. He makes the difference in the final third and that’s where you want the difference to be made. He is one of those players, he has an important part and I hope that can be resolved quickly.”

Everyone is in the same boat here I think. It feels like it’s been a long-drawn-out process, but realistically Celtic’s pre-season hasn’t even begun so we shouldn’t be panicking too much about a lack of announcement.

The reason everyone is so expectant is because of what exactly Petrov says. Jota is a crowd-pleaser, an entertainer. We want to see that back at Celtic Park next season, it’s part of the reason we pay for our tickets.

Having confirmation Jota is returning to play for Ange Postecoglou again will be a massive thing for supporters. Just a little more patience is required.

It surely can’t be long now!

In other news, Sutton loves the ‘little things’ he’s noticed about Celtic hero Juranovic as rumours circulate.
