Tam McManus drops Johnny Kenny claim amid suggestions of Celtic recall from Shamrock Rovers

The January transfer window is fast approaching and Celtic could be concluding a few deals.

You can’t have many complaints about how the season has panned out so far – the only blip was Celtic’s 7-1 defeat to Borussia Dortmund in the Champions League.

Other than that, there have been many high moments, including Celtic beating Rangers in the League Cup final on Sunday at Hampden.

As a result, some might feel that the champions don’t need to do much business during the winter transfer window, especially with a nine-point lead at the top of the Premiership table, and that with a game in hand.

But Brendan Rodgers has spoken openly about looking to do business and one area he could target is the striker department.

Yes, Celtic are happy with Kyogo Furuhashi and Adam Idah, but could there be a loan recall for Johnny Kenny from Shamrock Rovers?

Johnny Kenny backed to be handed an ‘opportunity’ at Celtic

First and foremost, if Kenny does earn a recall, then there is no point in parking him on the bench, he has to earn minutes and regular minutes.

Or else, you are just halting his progression, but Tam McManus thinks there could be something in this, as he told PLZ Soccer.

McManus has backed Kenny to be handed an ‘opportunity’ by Celtic, even though he doesn’t think a ‘third striker’ is needed.

“I don’t think the way Celtic play with the one (striker) and the two wide (wingers) that they need three (strikers),” claimed McManus.

“I think they are talking about the young boy Johnny Kenny coming back from Shamrock Rovers, who has been really positive and scored goals in Europe for them.

“Maybe they will give him an opportunity to come in. But the way Celtic play with the one striker, with Idah and Kyogo, unless one of them gets injured, you have got the basis covered. You have a big target man who can hold the ball up, or if a team is playing a high line, then you play Kyogo. I think the boy Kenny will get a wee opportunity.”

Kenny’s stats for Shamrock Rovers

Kenny is having the time of his life at Shamrock Rovers, after scoring 13 times in 29 league matches last season, he is now making noises in Europe.

The 21-year-old has scored in every match in the Europa Conference League, bar one match, and it is making people stand up and notice.

Is it enough for a recall? Only time will tell, but he is making serious progress.
