To nobody’s surprise, it has been a rather slow start to the summer for Celtic.

But as the Celtic players, who aren’t on World Cup duty, prepare to return for pre-season next Friday, some positive transfer news is emerging around Marcelo Saracchi.

Martin O’Neill wants Saracchi, who was on loan at Celtic last season from Boca Juniors, as the club’s first signing of the summer.

It has been reported by the Daily Record that the left-back has been ‘deemed surplus to requirements’ at Boca, and he is keen on a return to the champions of Scotland.

As a result, the Hoops are set to ‘open talks’ with the Argentina giants over a ‘permanent’ deal for Saracchi.

Marcelo Saracchi ‘wants assurances’ about his role at Celtic under Martin O’Neill

The key thing here is that Celtic want to re-sign Saracchi, and the player himself is keen on a return.

But while that bubbles in the background, the Daily Record have also stated that there is interest in the MLS and Turkey for his services, so Celtic have competition.

Whatever happens, the Uruguay international is expected to leave Boca because their coach, Rodolfo Arruabarrena, has suggested that he doesn’t have a future at the club.

It has been suggested that ‘£2 million’ could be enough to secure Saracchi’s services, but the player ‘wants assurances’ that he will have a ‘big role’ to play under O’Neill next term.

This is what Celtic fans want to hear…

There needs to be a lot of change at Celtic this summer, and as everyone can see, it has been the slowest of slow starts to that much-needed process.

But certain aspects of this summer write themselves, and the club can make life easier for themselves.

Everyone has seen the impact Saracchi made last season, especially against Hearts as Celtic won the title on the last day.

Simply put, sign him up. There is strong competition for Kieran Tierney, and it’s one less area of the pitch to worry about.
