Former Celtic transfer target Philip Zinckernagel has commented on the interest in him from Scotland last year.
The Watford winger, who was showing devastating form at Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt in 2020, had previously stated Celtic were one of the teams keen on his services.
However, in a Q+A session this week, he’s revealed a move to Glasgow was never really close.
As quoted by The Glasgow Times, he said: “We never got close to signing any deal with Celtic. But there was a lot of talking and a lot of interest, so it was something that I had to consider, for sure.
“There were a few Championship clubs interested as well, but nothing that attracted me as much as Watford did. Watford were a much bigger club and it was an easy decision in the end.”
What did Celtic miss out on in Zinckernagel?
Putting aside the ridiculous assertion that Watford are bigger than Celtic – what did the club miss out on?
As stated, he was in dynamite form in Norway before his move to England. Zinckernagel netted 22 goals and assisted 24 more throughout 2020 for Bodo/Glimt. [Transfermarkt]
Anyone would be interested in that kind of form.
Since moving to the Championship he’s been less productive, suggesting there is a ceiling to his potential. He’s made 20 appearances since joining in January, scoring one goal and assisting five more. [Transfermarkt]

It’ll be a big step up to the Premier League for him next year.
Was he good enough for Celtic? We’ll likely never know now.
We do know we badly need wingers ourselves, so hopefully there are some out there keen on making the move to Glasgow.
