Three transfers Celtic could complete on January transfer deadline day

Celtic are now into the final straight of the January transfer window and it’s safe to say it’s been a very frustrating one.

Nicolas Kuhn remains the only incoming as we enter deadline day after he arrived earlier in the month from Rapid Vienna for around £3m.

The German is a winger and that was never the priority position for manager Brendan Rodgers. A striker and a left-back are still very badly needed and there is just hours left to fill both areas of the park.

Kyogo Furuhashi is the only fit and available striker at the club due to Oh Hyeon-gyu’s ongoing participation at the Asian Cup with South Korea.

Meanwhile, Greg Taylor’s recent injury means Argentinian outcast Alexandro Bernabei has been brought out of cold storage to cover the Scotsman without any back-up of his own.

So what kind of deals could Celtic sanction over the course of the day? Here, 67 Hail Hail take a look at three potential incomings that could still be made on transfer deadline day.

Adam Idah plies his trade for Norwich City and this deal looks like it will be completed at some point today.

The 22-year-old striker, according to Sky Sports, has a agreed a loan switch to Celtic until the end of the season to help plug the gap left by Oh.

There was a suggestion it would be a loan-to-buy switch from the Canaries to the Hoops but it seems the deal will be a straight loan.

But does he fall under the ‘quality’ signings Brendan Rodgers is seeking this transfer window and beyond? Idah is only third choice at Norwich so it would suggest not.

Moreover, despite earning 22 caps for the Republic of Ireland thus far, Idah has only netted 17 goals in 115 games for Norwich since 2019 [Transfermarkt].

It appears Idah is very keen on the switch to Parkhead so barring any late hitches, Idah will be a Celtic player for the rest of the campaign.

Jeong Ho-yeon

As mentioned, Celtic desperately need left-back and striker solutions but they may yet add to their midfield department.

It’s unlikely the club will. However with David Turnbull linked with a move south to Cardiff City, there could be a position in the middle of the park to fill.

Jeong Ho-yeon has been the player mentioned in Celtic circles as far back as December. He plays for FC Gwangju in South Korea and one report suggested a couple of weeks ago that there is a ‘chance’ the Hoops will make a move for him.

Reports have quietened on Jeong since then but it’s transfer deadline day – anything can happen. The 23-year-old admits he hasn’t heard about any interest from Celtic but shared his dream is to make a move to Europe to further his career.

Jeong has played 71 games for FC Gwangju, scoring three and assisting seven [Transfermarkt]. His current contract expires in December 2024 so a cut-price deal for Celtic is realistic.

Sergio Gomez

And now to discuss which left-back Celtic could sign, if any at all. As reported by Football Scotland journalist Mark Hendry, the Hoops are likely to dip into the Premier League loan market for their man.

Newcastle United’s Matt Targett was linked briefly with a move north of the border but Eddie Howe was quick to rule that one out this week.

Ryan Giles has been mentioned by some fans on X but the Luton Town full-back has now made a loan switch to EFL Championship side Hull City.

It’s left-field and would prove difficult to navigate but could Celtic try their luck at loaning Sergio Gomez from Manchester City for the rest of the season?

The Spaniard can hardly get a look in under Pep Guardiola and has played just twice [Transfermarkt] in the Premier League this season, with TuttoMercatoWeb reporting recently that he is frustrated.

Gomez can easily be defined as genuine ‘quality’. It’s an unrealistic option but quite frankly, the Premier League left-back loan market is looking pretty threadbare and if worst comes to worst, it could be an academy youngster that is signed over the next few hours to mitigate Greg Taylor’s injury.
