Celtic are widely expected to sign their first striker of the January transfer window after Tomas Cvancara agreed to join the club last night.

Cvancara chose to join Celtic after the forward agreed personal terms for a six month loan with an option to buy.

Martin O’Neill finally has some much-needed reinforcements as the Celtic manager looks to defend the title in the closing stages of the season.

So who is Tomas Cvancara? When is his medical due and is he good enough to lead the Hoops’ forward line and spearhead the title defence?

Full profile of Tomas Cvancara, Celtic’s incoming striker

Cvancara ends Celtic’s year-long wait to find a replacement for Kyogo Furuhashi, but will he produce the goals like the Japanese striker once did?

At 25, Cvancara is entering his formative years and has eight caps for the Czech Republic. Beginning his career at Jablonec in 2018, the striker has enjoyed loan spells at Empoli, Vyšehrad and SFC Opava before getting his big move to Sparta Prague in 2021.

In two seasons at Prague, Cvancara won a league title and scored 24 goals in 49 appearances. That tempted Borussia Mönchengladbach to spend €10.5m on the Czech striker in 2023.

Cvancara has had a disappointing spell at the German club and struggled to find his goal-scoring form, hitting just four goals in 58 games.

A loan spell to Turkish side Antalyaspor in 2025 followed as Cvancara’s struggles continued with two goals in 13 games.

Towering at over six foot, Cvancara is certainly the type of striker Martin O’Neill likes and has been known to play as a right-winger.

Looking to kickstart his career, who better than O’Neill and Celtic to help Cvancara recapture the form that made him Borussia Monchengladbach’s most expensive-ever signing.

Tomas Cvancara’s Celtic medical and salary

With terms agreed and a deal with the Bundesliga club completed, all that remains is for Cvancara to complete his Celtic medical.

And Sky Sports’ Florian Plettenberg reveals the details of that, and how much Celtic will pay for his salary.

Taking to X, Plettenberg said, “Tomas Cvancara to Celtic – DONE DEAL.

“Full agreement with Borussia Mönchengladbach now. Six-month loan, with a purchase option included. Celtic will cover the player’s full remaining salary until the end of the season.

“25 y/o striker Cvancara is on his way to complete his medical on Wednesday.”

According to Capology, Cvancara is paid £16,670 per week and if he can help fire the Bhoys to the title, it will be worth every single penny.
