Why Nottingham Forest and Lucas Bergvall transfer news is key for Celtic and Arne Engels

There has been a lot of noise around Arne Engels’ future at Celtic.

Most of it stemmed from the January transfer window when Nottingham Forest tried to make big moves to sign the Celtic midfielder.

With the 2026 summer transfer window open, Forest’s interest in Engels hasn’t died down, especially given that they are expected to sell key midfielder Elliot Anderson to Manchester City.

However, an intriguing new transfer link has emerged, with The Athletic reporting that Nottingham Forest are looking to sign Tottenham Hotspur’s Lucas Bergvall to replace Anderson.

Either way, all of this makes for interesting reading from a Celtic perspective, because you wonder if the Midlands club will continue to push for Engels.

Lots of interest in Arne Engels. But will he leave Celtic?

Interest continues to grow in Arne Engels as Nottingham Forest push for Lucas Bergvall

It has been reported by The Athletic that Forest see Bergvall as Anderson’s replacement.

If that’s the case, then it does put Engels on the back foot, in terms of securing a possible transfer to the City Ground this summer.

Ideally, Celtic would want to keep the young Belgian star on board, but money talks, especially given the gulf in finances between Scottish and English football.

You could have a situation where, given Anderson’s importance to Forest, they might bring in more than one body in the middle of the park to replace him.

Bergvall and Engels’ transfer value

It has been suggested by the likes of Fabrizio Romano that around £45 million could lure Bergvall out of Spurs, who has asked to leave because he wants to earn regular game time.

While Engels is already Celtic’s club-record arrival at £11 million, his newly reported £25 million valuation is hardly a deterrent for English sides accustomed to spending heavily in such an inflated market.

You could make the argument that Forest sign more than one midfielder to try and replace Anderson.

The big-money buy such as Bergvall, and then spending around the £25 million mark for Engels.

Ultimately, given that Nottingham Forest have shown most interest in Engels, how the Premier League side navigates their midfield search over the coming months will likely have a significant knock-on effect for those at Parkhead.
