Celtic Women lost to Rangers Women in a thrilling Scottish Cup tie that saw the Hoops spurn a 3-1 first-half lead in Grant Scott’s first-ever Glasgow Derby.

Scott took over the team after former coach Elena Sadiku left Celtic in December to join BK Haken back in Sweden.

Since then Scott has taken his Celtic Women team to three straight wins beating Hibs in the Scottish Cup and Motherwell and Montrose in the SWPL.

But today, the Celtic boss took charge of his first Glasgow Derby as the Women’s team suffered Scottish Cup heartache.

Celtic lose Scottish Cup tie despite dominant first-half display vs Rangers

Celtic got out of the starting blocks early after Maria McAneny put the Ghirls ahead in the 16 minute at Broadwood.

Rangers equalised seven minutes later after a penalty was awarded which Rangers striker Katie Wilkinson converted.

Celtic took the again two minutes after the restart as Emma Lawton finished from close range. A two-goal advantage was opened up in the 37th minute after Poppy Pritchard converted from 12-yards with a penalty.

Rangers pulled one back before the break to make it 3-2 and in the dying minutes equalised to make it 3-3 to take the tie to extra-time.

Penalties beckoned and Celtic failed to convert two of their spot kicks to lost to Rangers 4-2 in a heartbreaking penalty shoot-out.

Celtic Women and the SWPL title race

Celtic Women are second in the table on 38 points, four behind Glasgow City who beat Hibs 2-1 on Saturday.

Hearts are in third place on 37 points with Rangers close behind on 36.

It appears that there is a four-way tussle for the title but Celtic are still in the hunt for the SWPL title despite their Scottish Cup heartache.
