It’s not often Celtic are put under the cosh, but that was the case against Dundee on Tuesday night.
Despite Luke McCowan opening the scoring after five minutes, and Hyunjun Yang doing the same at the start of the second half, Celtic had to settle for a 3-3 draw at Dundee and extend their lead at the top to 16.
Greg Taylor curled a brilliant cross towards the far post and McCowan, against his former club, did very well to guide the ball into the bottom corner.
Celtic’s summer signing didn’t celebrate, but then Dundee’s fast break levelled the scores, before another header put the champions ahead.
That’s when Dundee came roaring back with two goals, before a late Arne Engels penalty sealed a point on the road for Brendan Rodgers’ side.
From a defensive aspect, the players won’t want to look back on that performance because there wasn’t anything to shout about.
But Chris Sutton wanted to give his flowers to McCowan.
Chris Sutton hails Luke McCowan as Celtic draw 3-3 at Dundee
What a signing McCowan has been and what an impact he continues to have. Whether he is coming off the bench, or in this case starting, he is as reliable as anyone.
Sutton rightfully pointed out that ‘I can’t remember McCowan having a bad game in a Celtic jersey’, as he told Sky Sports Football (14/01/25).
And Sutton would be spot on, as he lauded the midfielder’s ‘absolutely stunning’ header that many expected him to guide across the box for Kyogo Furuhashi to tap in.
“He was brilliant for Dundee, McCowan,” said Sutton. “What a header this is. The spot from Taylor is sensational. I am thinking ‘he has to head that back across’. Kyogo was ready in the middle for a tap-in.
“But that is absolutely stunning. Back across Carson and into the far corner. What a return to his old club. I can’t tell you how good that header was.
“I can’t remember him having a bad game in a Celtic jersey. He always has some sort of impact. Often off the bench, but he brings that sharpness to the Celtic team. Brendan Rodgers always has a decision to make in those two number eight positions in midfield.”

McCowan’s stats for Celtic against Dundee
It’s interesting that when McCowan scored, he opted against celebrating, but it was still a well-taken goal and Rodgers surely has to keep home in the team.
Yes, Celtic’s squad is super strong and someone like Reo Hatate was on the bench, but that’s what competition is for and McCowan is earning his short.
As per, he looked lively in the middle of the pitch and the final third, with WhoScored rating his performance at 7.36.
