‘How’… Tony Watt can’t believe Rangers didn’t try and sign £1m Celtic player

The January transfer window is upon Celtic and, as yet, there has been no movement on any incomings or outgoings so far.

There has been plenty of talk about the possibility of Kieran Tierney returning to Celtic and, of course, Stephen Welsh making a loan move from the Bhoys to KV Mechelen.

However, eight days in and it’s still all quiet even though Brendan Rodgers said he is confident Celtic will make new additions to the squad this month.

But it was a player Celtic signed last summer who Tony Watt can’t believe Rangers didn’t attempt to sign despite the low fee it cost Rodgers to nab him on transfer deadline day.

Tony Watt stunned Rangers didn’t sign Celtic’s Luke McCowan

Luke McCowan was Celtic’s last signing of the summer transfer window after Brendan Rodgers shelled out £1m to land the former Dundee captain.

However, Watt said Rangers should have at least attempted to persuade McCowan with a bid of their own before Celtic sealed the deal.

Watt told Open Goal [57m], “How have Rangers not signed Luke McCowan? I know he’s a Celtic fan but how have they not even tested the water?

“How well is he doing at Celtic? How have Rangers not gone in and said, ‘There’s a million pounds’ halfway through the window.”

Three reasons why Rangers probably couldn’t sign Celtic fan Luke McCowan

Andy Halliday said that ‘football snobbery’ prevented Rangers from signing McCowan shortly after Watt made this claim but there could be simpler reasons why the move didn’t or may not have happened.

McCowan has been excellent for Celtic since his big move and it is likely he could retain his starting place against Dundee United tonight.

Another good performance will do his chances of staying in the Celtic starting lineup no harm as McCowan continues to impress the Hoops support with each passing game.
