Stephen Welsh has been a bit of a hot topic of late.

There are several reasons behind this. The January transfer window is re-opening, and Wilfried Nancy needs centre-backs to enhance his squad.

Celtic face Motherwell on Tuesday night, and Welsh’s performances have come under the spotlight amid his loan spell at Fir Park.

Of course, Welsh will be ineligible to play against his parent club, but he did start Motherwell’s defeat to Rangers at Ibrox over the weekend, and Barry Ferguson liked what he saw.

Barry Ferguson’s verdict on Celtic loanee Stephen Welsh at Motherwell

Some are suggesting that Celtic should recall Welsh, but Ferguson hinted at how he needs to continue playing ‘week in and week out.’

Speaking on Go Radio, Ferguson admitted that he was seriously impressed by the Celtic man at Ibrox, how he put in a ‘really good’ performance, and looked ‘very comfortable.’

Welsh is getting rave reviews for his performances under Jens Berthel Askou’s possession-based system, and Ferguson thinks it all spells good news for the centre-back’s long-term future.

“I saw Welsh play on Saturday with Motherwell against Rangers,” said Ferguson. “I thought he was really good.

“He looked very comfortable. He looked as if he had a lot of confidence because he is playing week in and week out.

“That could be a possibility (Celtic recalling Welsh). But I think Welsh needs to play week in and week out.

“I think if he continues this form at Motherwell, I think he will get a decent move.”

Is Jens Berthel Askou right about Celtic under Nancy? Let us know in the comments.

Welsh’s performances for Motherwell in numbers

It has been reported that Celtic won’t recall Welsh in January, and they are liking the progression he is making at Motherwell.

As long as the champions of Scotland bring in fresh faces to play in a back three when the transfer window re-opens, it’s the correct call to keep Welsh where he is.

WhoScored has provided Welsh with a rating of just under seven for his performances this season:
