BBC pundit states what he noticed about Tony Docherty just before Celtic penalty was awarded

Celtic moved 13 points clear at the top of the Premiership table on Wednesday night after a thumping win over Dundee.

The last time these two met, they shared six goals, but this time around, Celtic hit Dundee for six and produced another outstanding performance at Parkhead.

There were four different goalscorers on the night – Arne Engels’ brace, Adam Idah scoring again, Daizen Maeda’s double and Nicolas Kuhn from the bench.

All of this is fitting because it allows the Celtic players to boost their confidence ahead of that mouthwatering showdown against Bayern Munich in the Champions League next week.

There were some incredible goals scored on the night, especially by Celtic’s Player of the Year contender, Maeda.

But the simplest strike came from Engels, who opened the scoring in the 18th minute, after a penalty was awarded following a VAR check.

Dundee came into this game after being hit for six by Hearts, so the last thing they would have wanted is to concede an early goal.

Unfortunately for them, they were handing a goal on a plate to the champions when Mohamed Sylla pulled back Auston Trusty’s shirt.

The crazy thing about all of this was that Trusty was deemed to have committed the foul in the first place.

But then, VAR came to its senses, told the on-field referee to have a look at his monitor and he overturned his call to a spot-kick.

Tony Docherty’s reaction to Celtic’s penalty being awarded

As the on-field ref, Colin Steven, went over to his monitor to check the incident, a certain Tony Docherty in the opposition dugout was starting to look worried.

Normally that signifies that the original call was going to be overturned, as the Dundee manager’s nightmares became a reality.

Michael Stewart was watching Docherty closely and stated that he went from being ‘delighted’ with how his team had started the match to being ‘extremely nervous’, as he told BBC Radio Scotland.

“Tony Docherty has gone from being delighted in the opening 15 minutes to being extremely nervous that a penalty is going to be given against his side,” said Stewart.

“We have got to say, I haven’t seen the incident back, but it did look a little bit bizarre that there was a free-kick given against Trusty when he was sort of on his knees almost. It was imminently clear what had actually happened. You had assumed the referee had seen something that we hadn’t. Clearly, VAR has seen something the official didn’t see.”
