Celtic fans were in for a surprise when Maik Nawrocki was named in the XI against Rangers on Sunday.
Before Celtic’s 3-2 defeat to Rangers, Nawrocki had only played 23 minutes of football under Brendan Rodgers this season.
But injuries to Auston Trusty and Liam Scales, as well as captain Callum McGregor missing, meant that it was a first start of the season for the Poland star.
For whatever reason, the Celtic manager hasn’t had much trust in playing Nawrocki, with Cameron Carter-Vickers, Scales, Trusty and even youngster, Dane Murray playing ahead of him.
But despite Celtic’s woeful display, lack of control, especially in that first half, not many could hold their heads up high.

Celtic fans all say the same thing about Maik Nawrocki’s performance against Rangers
Given that this was Nawrocki’s first start, then he can hold his head up high because he put in a performance like he has been playing all season long.
Rangers’ 2-0 lead at half-time could and should have been worse, especially when Nawrocki stopped Vascal Cerny with some outstanding last-ditch defending.
When Celtic were on the ropes, the fans on social media were pretty clear with how Nawrocki was performing and they were sure to give him his flowers.
The rest of the players deserve criticism for what they produced, but not Nawrocki.
@ewan_mckeegan reacted to Nawrocki’s last-ditch tackle: ‘Nawrocki saved us there’.
@DavidAl71528662 added: ‘Nawrocki playing well, Schmicheal looks lost’.
@TeeKAye10 was critical of the rest, but not of Nawrocki: ‘Nawrocki wur best defender in a shambolic defence. Nervous ninnies.’.
@angie647 was pretty clear: ‘Nawrocki has been Celtics best player so far. Too many misplaced passes’.
@hallscott02 says only one man can hold his head up high: ‘That was brutal! Hope BR goes through the lot of them at HT. Nawrocki the only player playing well. Too many bottlers looking for McGregor’.
@doc_kevdoc7 added: ‘Nawrocki been celtics best player. tells u everything whats wrong a guy who hasnt played from may’.
@celtmuppet with the truth: ‘Only player worth his wage has been Nawrocki, a guy that hasn’t kicked a baw all season.’.
@Shaybee7 added: ‘Miles off it. Only Nawrocki is having a good game’.
@luispalmacsc stated: ‘It is quite clear that Engels cannot play McGregor’s role. Ironically Nawrocki has been our best player. No attacking threat whatsoever, quick start a necessity’.
@KyleG_1967 compared Carter-Vickers and the man who has hardly played this season: ‘Nawrocki has been our best player so far, CCV looks like the one whos played 23 minutes this season’.
@james_cassidy3 only gave a few pass marks: ‘Maeda, jota, nawrocki and yang only players with pass marks, rest of the team absolutely embarrassing’.
@Tolando77, with an overview: ‘My takes from game -Maeda work rate too important out wide, need to buy a new st! -Idah empty shirt again. -Nawrocki had a gd game. -Cal mac is so important to celtic, today showed that! schlupp was terrible! Midfield tired. League is still ours
@PatrickMurphy89 added: ‘Don’t care if we improved a bit in the second half, that was another terrible performance against them. Nawrocki aside, the defence and Schmeichel were awful. Can’t cope with any kind of press. The jersey on a day like this was too heavy for Mccowan. Engels still too naive’.
@quigley_mick wants to see more of Nawrocki: ‘note to brendan.. nawrocki deserves a shirt.. and this passin back non stop is unacceptable totally unacceptable.. 9 goals lost to that rangers team in 3 games’.
Nawrocki’s stats for Celtic against Rangers
It’s pretty simple, Celtic need to see more of Nawrocki and he has to start more games before the season comes to an end.
Everyone knows that Celtic will win the title, but there are long-term issues with the defence and someone like Nawrocki could help out.
To concede three goals – none of which were his fault – and for WhoScored to grant him a rating of over seven for his performance is pretty impressive.
