Celtic heading for rare TV blackout; not even pay-per-view can save the day

Celtic return to action this weekend when they take on Hearts in a tasty-looking clash.

The Tynecastle clash is a 2:15pm kick-off and will be shown live on Sky Sports — the second part of our very own Celtic ‘Super Sunday’.

Given that we have only been given 576 tickets for the game, it’s probably a good thing that the match is being shown live on television.

However, the same can’t be said for our visit to the capital next week. Yes, six days after taking on Hearts on their home patch, we visit their rivals Hibernian.

The game hasn’t been chosen for live coverage by Sky Sports, with the broadcasters instead showing Kilmarnock vs Aberdeen the following day. (SPFL)

That opened up the possibility of Hibs showing the match via pay-per-view. As per The Guardian, terms in the new television contract allow each Premiership club to sell up to five of their home matches on pay-per-view each season.

However, that’s only if the games haven’t been chosen by Sky and don’t fall between 2:45pm and 5:15pm on a Saturday.

So, simply put, with no news of the game being rescheduled, and that is extremely unlikely now given that the match is just over a week away, it seems very much like we’re heading for a proper blackout.

No Sky Sports coverage, no pay-per-view. Without a ticket, there will be no legal way in the UK and Ireland to watch the match live. That’s not a great look for the league given that ourselves and Hibernian are both leading clubs.

Better get that radio looked out.
