‘Easy to criticise’ – Celtic fans make their feelings clear on Auston Trusty after win over Newcastle

Who will be Celtic’s centre-back pairing for the 2025/26 campaign?

Perhaps a name many will agree on is Cameron Carter-Vickers, but after that, it’s up for debate, and it will be interesting to see who Brendan Rodgers picks.

In pre-season, Celtic beat Newcastle United 4-0 on Saturday afternoon, with Auston Trusty starting at the heart of the defence, alongside Liam Scales and Dane Murray.

Summer signing Hayato Inamura continued at left-back, and it seems as though that’s the role he will be fighting for alongside Kieran Tierney ahead of the new season.

But with Trusty picking up the Man of the Match award for his performance against Newcastle, it got the Celtic fans talking.

Celtic fans react to Auston Trusty’s performance against Newcastle United

Trusty signed for Celtic last summer, and he was in and out of the XI, but now the supporters are urging him to take his chance.

Many think that what the USMNT international produced against Newcastle is what he needs to be doing regularly.

Whether he is or isn’t the first choice next to Carter-Vickers, one thing is for sure: he is going to be handed several chances, and the fans think he can deliver.

@Goose1167 hailed two of Celtic’s backline: ‘Inamura has been a great find so far. Trusty has been excellent as well.’

@CelticLass07 wants to see more of this Trusty: ‘Really good first half there. If this trusty were to be more consistent, then Scales will struggle to feature. Maeda’s press is massive to this team, and I really like Inamura.’

Trusty has won over this Celtic fan, as @scaldinitistic added: ‘ykw (you know what)? Trusty, I am moved.’

@katedunbar61 thinks it was a deserved Man of the Match display from Trusty: ‘Celtic phenomenal today, Trusty man of the match well deserved.’

More praise for the American, as @MildooWolf stated: ‘KT & Inamura are Celtic’s 2 LB’s absolutely, no doubt about it. Yang is at very least our backup right winger, he was superb today, Trusty immense but need a quality CB for competition as well as a left/right winger & maybe a striker depending on how good Yamada is, looking good tho.’

@BrennanMatin named Trusty as one of his standout performers: ‘Well, credit where credit due, friendly or not, that was a great performance from us 4-0, and they brought 10,000 to watch us pump them 😂.

‘But some stand out performances, Meada, Kenny, Trusty, Engles, Yang, idah, KT, some class balls in well done Celtic keeping the likes of me quiet.’

@chris21810 continued the theme: ‘Excellent first half from Celtic. Trusty commanding, Inamura impressive, slotted in really well at left back, brilliant left foot, every pass is rapped into a teammate.’

@MuzzaBhoy thinks Trusty has set the bar for himself: ‘That’s the level we know you’ve got in you, as seen it before in Bergamo. This is your season. 💪🍀’

@tambrogan7074 wanted to note how Trusty has performed over the last two matches: ‘Thought Trusty was outstanding, easy to criticise him, but the last two games outstanding.’

@RyanConnell84 described Trusty’s performance with one word: ‘Stellar today, btw.’

Another Celtic fan calling for Trusty to make this more consistent, @RobertJ90427282 added: ‘This CANT be a one off Big Lad …..it’s got to be week in week out. Cheers for the rest of the season, HH.’

Trusty’s reaction after Celtic’s win over Newcastle

From the player’s perspective, he picked up two trophies in his debut campaign at Celtic, and that’s never easy.

Yes, Celtic are making winning trophies look easy, but it shouldn’t be underestimated, and he is allowed that settling-in period, which has now passed.

Trusty took to social media after the Newcastle match to address the supporters, and he was in a buoyant mood.

‘Two wins, two clean sheets, & a MOTM performance!’ wrote Trusty.

‘A great way to close out the week against two strong opponents. As always, incredible support at home today & a special honour wearing the captain armband in Lisbon for #CelticFC 🍀.’
