Chris Sutton hails ‘sensational’ Celtic bench player who wants more starts after win v Ross County

Brendan Rodgers ensured that Celtic continued to put their foot on the accelerator in Dingwall on Saturday.

Another day and three points for the champions, this time Celtic beat Ross County 4-1 to move 18 points clear at the top of the Premiership table.

Once again, Rodgers refreshed the XI, but it didn’t make a difference because the starting players performed as well as those coming off the bench.

Even with Celtic being halfway through the season, you sense that it isn’t clear what his strongest XI is because there have been so many top performers.

One of the most difficult areas of the pitch to break into is the middle of the park and that’s where Chris Sutton wanted to give Luke McCowan his flowers.

Chris Sutton hails ‘sensational’ Luke McCowan after Celtic beat Ross County

What a signing McCowan has been for Celtic as he added another goal to his name during the win over Ross County on Saturday.

The 27-year-old had actually started back-to-back matches, but was on the bench for the trip to Dingwall.

Sutton thinks that McCowan will want more starts, but highlighted the quality in front of him, as he told Sky Sports Football (11/01/25 at 2:50 pm).

“I think he has been sensational since he has signed for Celtic,” said Sutton.

“He just adds sharpness whenever he comes on. He should score, but it’s such a composed finish. A couple of quick touches and McCowan impresses.

“He will probably think ‘my performances, I deserve more game time’. Celtic have strength in depth in that area. He has got such great composure. Always adds something when he does come off the bench.”

McCowan’s stats for Celtic this season

Celtic are heading towards the knockout stages of the Champions League, so Rodgers will need to further rotate his squad during these coming weeks.

It will provide McCowan the chance to earn more starts, it’s just a case of whether those opportunities come in Europe’s elite competition because he has only had two bench appearances so far.

Either way, Celtic will be happy with what the future Scotland international has produced this term.
