Chris Sutton jibes at what the Rangers board said on the Fir Park pitch about Celtic after 1-1 draw

Chris Sutton loves a good wind-up, and the Celtic hero was at it again on Saturday evening.

It’s the opening weekend of the 2025/26 Premiership season, and Rangers have already dropped points away at Motherwell.

Celtic won the title by 17 points last term, and despite the Gers beating Brendan Rodgers’ side twice, it was still a comfortable and cigar-in-mouth season for Scotland’s most successful club.

Even though those at Ibrox have appointed a new manager in Russell Martin, made a lot of noise, and invested in their squad, it’s the same old story repeating itself.

And, as always, Celtic’s former striker couldn’t help himself whilst on punditry duty for Sky Sports.

Chris Sutton mocks what the Rangers board will be saying about Celtic

Even though Celtic have won 13 out of the last 14 titles, including the double last term, there has been a lot of negative noise and question marks over how transfer business has been conducted this summer.

But following Rangers’ 1-1 draw at Motherwell, the Gers manager, alongside chief executive Patrick Stewart, and sporting director Kevin Thelwell, were captured on camera in discussion on the side of the Fir Park pitch.

Speaking on Sky Sports Football (02/08/25), Sutton was asked what might have been said, and he joked that the positive Rangers board will take from their opening game is that ‘Celtic might not buy players now.’

“Can you give me five or six players? Maybe that’s the discussion after the way he filleted the dressing room,” said Sutton about the Rangers board gathering on the side of the pitch post-Motherwell draw.

“Rangers have to win. Closing the gap on Celtic isn’t going to be enough. Russell knows the pressure which he is under. He has got to win over a fair section of the fanbase.”

Kris Boyd then added: “Rangers’ problem now. We all agree that they need to get players in. But the squad is bloated. There are far too many underperforming players that have driven the culture for far too long now, and it needs to change.”

Sutton then jibed: “I tell you what they might have been saying, they might have been saying, ‘well, the good thing with that performance is that Celtic might not buy players now.’

Boyd responded: “Maybe. What are you going to talk about then?”

Celtic prepare for Flag Day against St Mirren

It’s pretty pathetic that Celtic aren’t opening the season by unfurling the flag as the champions of the 2024/25 season.

But after a few games have been played on the opening weekend, Brendan Rodgers starts the new campaign, just as he ended the last.

That’s St Mirren coming to Glasgow, and trying to stop a Celtic side that has become accustomed to dealing with the pressure and getting the job done.
