Chris Sutton on the ‘scandalous’ Celtic moment in Rangers defeat, Hoops were lucky

There wasn’t much for Celtic to be happy about after defeat to Rangers this afternoon.

Celts were beaten 3-2 by their rivals in front of their home support on what was a really frustrating game of football. The Hoops missed captain Callum McGregor but the entire team were off-colour on the day.

Daizen Maeda and Reo Hatate scored for Celtic after Nico Raskin and Mo Diomande had given the visitors a 2-0 lead. As Brendan Rodgers’ troops chased the victory they were sucker-punched by a late Hamza Igamane strike to silence Parkhead and stun the hosts.

It could have been a Celtic win on another day but had Rangers attacker Vaclav Cerny taken advantage of a mistake from Kasper Schmeichel, it might have been worse.

Schmeichel’s pass was ‘scandalous’ says Celtic hero Sutton

Chris Sutton on commentary duties said as much as he described a poor pass from the Danish goalkeeper as “scandalous”. Cameron Carter-Vickers would help his teammate out as Cerny messed up the chance, but Sutton was not particularly quick to exonerate the stopper.

“That’s scandalous from Schmeichel, he’s way off with that pass,” Sutton said on Schmeichel’s error.

“I just wondered if Cerny could have taken the shot on earlier? It was on his right foot.”

Sutton in the aftermath of the game has had plenty to say as the Englishman discussed Celtic’s failures on the pitch.

Sutton reminded Rangers of the natural order at the top

The retired striker explained, though, that their Premiership lead at the top – 13 points now – is still a strong one as he reminded Gers of the natural order of things in Glasgow.

Following the final whistle, Sutton gave Rangers their dues for the performance and the win.

But he issued a reminder. “Superb advert for the Scottish game. Igamane took his goal superbly and deserved of winning any game,” he tweeted.

“Bottom line is the gap at the top is 13 points with 8 games left. I know who I’d rather be. Fair play to Rangers who play well when the pressure and expectation isn’t on them…”
