Celtic’s win over Aberdeen passed by without any real controversies.

There were no dubious red card decisions, dodgy offsides or even ridiculous fouls despite Aberdeen’s strong-arm tactics against Celtic.

Goals from Benjamin Nygren and Reo Hatate sealed a fairly routine Celtic win at Pittodrie which put the Parkhead club joint-top of the league with Hearts.

However, there was a talking point in the game being spoken about Celtic fans online where they thought the Parkhead club should have had a penalty when the score was sitting at 1-0.

As Sky Sports refused to talk about it, 67 Hail Hail sought advice from legendary former referee, Mark Clattenburg.

Mark Clattenburg explains Aberdeen handball vs Celtic

Many Celtic fans spotted a handball infringement by Graeme Shinnie on X and one even contacted me for my thoughts on it.

Having missed it, 67 Hail Hail decided to contact former FIFA referee Mark Clattenburg for his thoughts on the Aberdeen handball.

Speaking exclusively to 67 Hail Hail, Clattenburg said, “Celtic should not have been awarded a penalty when an Aberdeen player touched the ball with his hand.

“As the defender is failing after challenging for the ball, he accidentally, in the act of breaking his fall, touches the ball with his hand.

“This, under the interpretation of handball, will not be given when a hand in the act of breaking your fall touches the ball.”

VAR and Celtic

Celtic have had many issues with VAR over the years and, thankfully, this wasn’t one that affected the outcome of the Aberdeen result.

With the non-penalty award deemed correct by Clattenburg, Celtic fans still have nightmares over decisions that cost the team against the likes of Hearts and Rangers since it’s induction in October 2022.

Celtic will have plenty of fixtures to negotiate over the course of this season and fans will be hoping that VAR will not have an effect on the Parkhead club’s quest for silverware.
