Ex-SFA referee blasts Willie Collum and John Beaton about Celtic penalty vs Kilmarnock

The Celtic penalty meltdown continues as former referees can’t wait to put their tuppence-worth in.

To get an impartial view on Celtic’s penalty against Kilmarnock, 67 Hail Hail contacted Mark Clattenburg who said the spot kick award was ‘harsh’.

Former Premier League referee Dermot Gallagher also said that he was surprised John Beaton decided to award Celtic the penalty after reviewing it on-screen.

We also told how former SFA men Des Roache and Steve Conroy were severely criticised by Celtic fans for their social media rant over the spot kick controversy.

And now, Roache returns a full 24 hours later to let Beaton and SFA Head of Referees Willie Collum have it both barrels.

Des Roache accuses Willie Collum of ‘doubling down’ over Celtic penalty

Willie Collum is in the firing line now after the SFA released guidance minutes after Celtic’s win at Kilmarnock explaining why the penalty decision was correct.

Roache wasn’t having it as he told Hotline Live, “I’m entirely of the same view. I think it was a shocking, appalling decision to be made.

“I think Willie’s doubling down and going back on everything that he said over the past couple of years since he’s taken over saying that he wants more football understanding, football decisions being made.

“That’s not a football decision being made there. Now if the ball had come up off Mayo’s leg and hit him, I could maybe have a bit more understanding because he’s in control of his own leg there.

“But it’s come off a teammate that he’s got no control over. So how is he meant to anticipate where it’s meant to be?

John Beaton’s ‘courage’ questioned over Celtic penalty

Next up for Roache is Beaton. The match referee came into the former SFA man’s crosshairs as he questioned Beaton’s courage at not standing up to the VAR decision.

Roache continued, “I really think that John Beaton should have had enough courage and conviction in himself to go across to that camera, look at it and say, ‘No, I’m not accepting that.’

“We’ve both been in work today and I am still yet to find anybody who supports that as a penalty kick.”

It’s been a long time, if ever, that a penalty decision has caused such controversy whenever Celtic have been involved.

The amount of questions being raised over this one award is quite bizarre considering the number of penalties that were awarded across the city over a number of years barely got a mention.

As it stands, Brendan Rodgers and the Celtic team will care not a jot as they prepare for the Premier Sports Cup fixture at Partick Thistle whilst sitting at the top of the league.
