I watched Celtic’s title chase run out of steam against Dundee United, here are two reasons why

As Celtic lost to Dundee United in the city of discovery, we realised that the chances of winning the league are also fading away.

Martin O’Neill’s side lost 2-0 and are five points behind league leaders Hearts as the final international break of the season begins to get underway.

As fans confronted the board at the end of the game, I noticed two things that left me feeling like the chances of being crowned champions are all but dead in the water.

Should Martin O’Neill take some of the blame for the loss to Dundee United?

Celtic overcomplicate simple things in the final third

Celtic used to be so ruthless in front of goal, punishing opposition sides for the smallest of errors. Nowadays they get to the edge of the box and look like rabbits in the headlights.

I lost count of the amount of times the Hoops had the ball in the attacking third and instead of having a shot on goal or playing it wide to get a cross in, a player would take a touch too many or miscontrol the ball and watch the move break down.

This slow, lethargic build-up suits nobody and is tiresome to watch.

Celtic stars have checked out already

Tannadice may have looked like Troon Beach with all of the sand on it, but some of Celtic’s players took that too literally and looked as if they were on their holidays.

Once again, Daizen Maeda was lacklustre and seemed uninterested while Reo Hatate waltzed around the pitch without a care in the world.

Others who have usually been so reliable were also off the pace, including the captain Callum McGregor, who was hooked in the second half after clearly looking unfit enough to last the 90 minutes.

Most of these players will be off in the summer and it can’t come soon enough.
