One of the standout ties this season’s revamped Champions League format has thrown up is Celtic’s trip to Villa Park.

A few stories are emerging from this game because a certain John McGinn is the Aston Villa captain.

Everyone knows that McGinn is a boyhood Celtic fan, so that game is going to be extra special for him, especially given that it’s going to be played on the Champions League stage.

The 29-year-old has faced the Bhoys before during his days in Scotland, including scoring a brace as a Hibernian player at Parkhead.

Whilst McGinn will have his thoughts set on helping Villa to victory, his family, who are all Celtic supporters, will be cheering on Brendan Rodgers’ side.

Celtic have made an outstanding start to their Champions League campaign and they are confident of reaching the knockout stages.

Rodgers’ most difficult test is away at Borussia Dortmund and that game is around the corner.

What’s interesting is that Celtic’s showdown against Villa will be the final group game of this season’s Champions League, so everything could be decided by then or everything could yet be on the line.

Either way, when it was suggested that it was mad to think Celtic could win at Villa Park, Paul McGinn, the older brother of John, didn’t downplay it and stated ‘of course they can’ win, as he told Open Goal

Celtic backed to beat John McGinn’s Aston Villa in the Champions League

“It’s a Wednesday night, so it’s no good (in regards to watching the game at the stadium) if it was a Tuesday night, I would be able to go on the day off,” shared Paul McGinn. “It’s Wednesday night and it will just be a nightmare. Proper nightmare.

“I think Villa are going to be favourites, but of course they can (beat Villa). They need to be at the peak of their game. It’s one of those. Villa’s home record is unreal. Even last year, beating Man City and Arsenal.”

Daizen Maeda is one of the quickest players in Europe and he is going to love playing against Villa, as well as star striker Kyogo Furuhashi.

Whatever is or isn’t on the line when the game comes about, you know the Celtic fans will travel in their thousands and thousands to Birmingham and the atmosphere is going to be beyond incredible.
