Celtic’s win over Newcastle United this pre-season added another Premier League scalp to Brendan Rodgers’ mantle.
Fans will remember how Celtic easily beat Man City and Chelsea in last season’s tour of the USA where Brendan Rodgers’ side ran out comfortable winners.
The Celtic Park win over Newcastle capped off a great week where the Hoops beat Sporting CP in Portugal and it seems that the Bhoys’ performances are getting better as the quality of opposition increases.
And it seems that the Hoops’ humbling of the Premier League club has not gone down well south of the border.

English media blast ‘rudderless’ Newcastle after Celtic defeat
Whenever an English Premier League side loses to Celtic, the media down south do not like it.
There is a certain arrogance that follows English sides north of the border and that arrogance was given a humbling at the weekend as the media down south lambasted Newcastle’s capitulation at Celtic.
Sky Sports: “Celtic thrashed Newcastle 4-0 as the Scottish champions celebrated Kieran Tierney’s return to the club – and sounded alarm bells for Eddie Howe’s Premier League side.”
The Shields Gazette: Goalkeeper Nick Pope was on the receiving end of most of the criticism as the media outlet said, “Reacted well to parry Schar’s own-goal-bound volley out for a corner. Sent the wrong way for Celtic’s penalty.
“Did enough to stop Celtic making it 2-0 shortly before half time by closing down Engles, who was unmarked in the box. But was then badly at fault for misjudging a bouncing ball badly to allow Johnny Kenny to stroke the ball into an empty net. A nightmare moment for the Newcastle No. 1.”
The Northern Echo: “After a difficult start to the summer, Newcastle United could have done without crashing to a 4-0 defeat at Celtic this afternoon, with Alexander Isak’s absence from the squad at Parkhead adding to the sense of unease that has descended on Eddie Howe and his side since the end of last season.”
Chronicle Live: “Newcastle United looked a little rudderless as they were thrashed 4-0 by Celtic at Parkhead.
“Let’s not disguise it, Newcastle didn’t give 10,000 travelling fans much to shout about in Glasgow’s East End, but a chant of: “We love you Newcastle we do” still boomed around the famous old stadium towards full-time.”
Brendan Rodgers delighted with one Celtic player’s ‘very good’ performance vs Newcastle
Brendan Rodgers was delighted with Celtic’s win and pinpointed Benjamin Nygren’s role in the big 4-0 win.
Rodgers said, “Very good. Initially, it’s about coming in and adapting to a massive club.
“Benji (Nygren) has settled in really well. Some of our younger players also, so yeah, it has been building for us, and we have a lot more to come. Some more to bring in also.
“But overall, with this group and where we are, at the moment, you can see them progressing really well.”
Next up is the Como Cup where the Hoops will face Ajax and/or Como and Al Hilal as Rodgers looks to end Celtic’s pre-season preparations with another trophy.
