Jeremie Frimpong was back in British football in a competitive capacity on Sunday.
After Frimpong’s successful spell at Celtic, which lasted just under two years, he further enhanced his reputation at Bayer Leverkusen and was then signed by Liverpool this summer.
Scottish football has already kicked off, with Celtic winning two from two, but English football’s new season started with the Premier League champions facing the FA Cup winners, Crystal Palace, at Wembley.
Palace beat Liverpool on penalties, following an entertaining 2-2 draw after 90 minutes, which included Frimpong scoring on his debut.

As soon as Frimpong donned Celtic colours and began showcasing his talent, those inside Parkhead were telling the world what he was all about and will become.
And now, the Liverpool supporters are doing that on social media, as many of them were really impressed by what he produced on his debut, despite the defeat.
@NickGrowingOld stated what’s insane about Frimpong: ‘Frimpong hustles back on everything. It’s insane to watch, he will save us a few this season!’
More praise from the one-time Celtic hero, as @jamie_lfc1989 added: ‘My takes from today, Ekitike and Wirtz were brilliant. Frimpong and Kerkez look good. Szoboszlai looks like he has a point to prove this season. We need to cash in on Elliott now, whilst his value is high; his value will drop next year. We need another forward and a CB.’
@UsiBenno used one word to describe Frimpong: ‘Wirtz – Special. Looks effortless at times. Ekitike – Solid. Has a lovely touch about him. Frimpong – Solid. Love that he takes on his man.’
@s_phillips8 thinks Frimpong is an upgrade: ‘In a nutshell, as an LFC fan today, Frimpong / Kerkez are such an upgrade defensively, although Kerkez found wanting positionally a few times today.’

Frimpong actually defends and tracks back, unlike a certain friend of Bellingham and Nunez could never curl a low shot like Ekitike can.’

What Frimpong once said about the Celtic Park atmosphere
Anfield is renowned for its atmosphere, especially on European nights, but it’s something Frimpong has been used to.
The rising Dutch star got a taste of Celtic’s atmosphere as a player and also when playing for Bayer in a Europa League match.
And going by Frimpong’s comments, from September 2024, Liverpool will need to do something really special to match or surpass what he has already experienced at Scotland’s most successful club.
“I was back there with Bayer for a Europa League tie three years ago – and oh my days!” stated Frimpong. “The atmosphere was superb, still the best I have ever encountered in my career.
“Some people say that can act as a 12th man for Celtic, and there will be times when that is true. We eventually ran out 4-0 winners on the night, but we had to ride the storm while Celtic were being urged on by their supporters.
“I’m so grateful for my time at Celtic. They made me the player I am today. In fact, after we beat Wolfsburg last Sunday, one of the first things I did was seek out their result against Falkirk, as I had seen they were 2-1 down at half-time.”
