Mark Clattenburg has told 67 Hail Hail why Kelechi Iheanacho’s goal against Braga was disallowed.

Iheanacho’s equaliser was ruled out after VAR claimed that the striker had handled the ball.

Celtic went on to lose 2-0 to Braga in a disappointing performance that saw the likes of Kasper Schmeichel and Paulo Bernardo underperform.

Chris Sutton was fuming with the handball verdict, but the former referee, who was involved in plenty of high-profile encounters, gave his verdict on the decision.

Mark Clattenburg felt Celtic’s disallowed goal was harsh

Many were left perplexed by the call to disallow the goal, with fans scratching their heads inside Celtic Park.

However, former Premier League referee Clattenburg thinks that despite the laws of the game stating that the goal had to be ruled out, the decision was very harsh.

Clattenburg told 67 Hail Hail: “VAR have disallowed the goal due to it allegedly touching Kelechi Iheanacho’s hand after immediately scoring a goal.

“At first glance the ball looks like it clearly touches the head and this leads to the confusion. When you slow it down, it slightly brushes the arm before it touches the head.

“This is an incredibly harsh call by the referee team but while this law is defined in this way, then the call is correct.

“However it does not feel right that a goal should be disallowed in this circumstances.”

Celtic can’t let the disallowed goal distract them from performance

Brendan Rodgers was shocked at the disallowed goal, but the performance would have have surprised him even more.

Celtic were good in patches but the Hoops didn’t test the resolve of the Braga defence enough to warrant coming away with the points.

Aside from the disallowed goal and a curling effort from Sebastian Tounekti, it was all very passive once again.

The boos at full time spoke volumes and things need to improve drastically.
