Martin O’Neill explains Celtic’s course of action for Kasper Schmeichel’s latest ‘shoulder problem’

It’s Déjà vu for Celtic’s number one goalkeeper, Kasper Schmeichel.

This time last season, Schmeichel injured his shoulder playing for Denmark against Portugal, and it would sideline the Celtic man for a period of time.

Fast forward to Celtic’s Scottish Cup win against Dundee on Saturday evening, and it seems that old injury has reared its ugly head.

Viljami Sinisalo started in between the sticks against Dundee, as the Hoops needed extra time to earn their ticket into the next round, as Martin O’Neill spoke about Schmeichel’s issue.

Should Viljami Sinisalo be the long-term replacement for Kasper Schmeichel?

Why Kasper Schmeichel didn’t play for Celtic against Dundee

According to O’Neill, Celtic’s number one goalkeeper will ‘get an injection’, which probably hints towards him playing against Livingston on Wednesday night in the Premiership.

Ironically enough, the last time Celtic faced Livi, Schmeichel was absent, and Sinisalo started that six-goal thriller under then-manager, Wilfried Nancy.

But it seems as though Schmeichel didn’t play against Dundee so his shoulder could get a bit of a rest, as O’Neill told Premier Sports (07/02/26).

“Kasper just needs a break, really,” said O’Neill. “I think he has a bit of a shoulder problem.

“But I think it’s a chance to clear up. I think he will get an injection. So, just this particular weekend, and it’s an opportunity for Sinisalo to do well.”

Is Viljami Sinisalo ready to be Celtic’s number one goalkeeper?

Whatever happens with Celtic this season, title or no title, a clear-out is needed in the summer, from top to bottom, because this campaign has been woeful.

One area that needs to be looked at is the goalkeeping department. It wasn’t so long ago that Celtic fans were booing Schmeichel, because his performances have been troublesome this season.

But is Sinisalo the guy to take the main gloves? Whenever he has been handed a chance, he has looked strong.
