Pat Bonner names two positions he expects Wilfried Nancy to improve in Celtic side when transfer window opens

Pat Bonner believes there are two areas of the pitch that Wilfried Nancy will look at improving in the January transfer window.

Nancy finally won his first game as Celtic manager at the fifth attempt as the Hoops beat Aberdeen 3-1.

The Frenchman was delighted with the way his side played as the Bhoys dominated proceedings against the Dons, who spent almost an hour down to 10 men.

Regardless, it was a much-needed result, but there can still be room for improvement.

Celtic need a striker and defender, says Pat Bonner

If there was one area to criticise, it was Celtic’s finishing.

Daizen Maeda and Johnny Kenny were both guilty of missing easy chances in the first half, while a number of others wasted good opportunities.

Celtic recorded an xG of 4.5 – showing that on another day, this could’ve been a five or six-goal haul for the Bhoys.

There were also some heart-in-mouth moments defensively, and Bonner thinks it is those two positions that will be the priority.

He told Sportsound: “Celtic need a striker to put the ball in the back of the net.

“Any top, top class striker would’ve probably scored maybe three or four goals there today. There is no question.

“He’s just got to tighten up those defensive qualities. That’s the bit I would think he might bring in a player to consolidate that.”

How much will Celtic spend in January?

This team is clearly in need of work being done to it, but the question is: how much will Nancy be given to spend?

Brendan Rodgers was left frustrated by the lack of money spent in the summer, and anyone who is going to improve the first team won’t come cheaply.

To go to the next level, Celtic need to spend and that may even mean breaking their transfer record of £11m.

We know that Celtic have money in the bank, it’s just a case of hoping the board get the chequebook out.
